After Creature Languages, where today's classroom guest had given Xander more than a little pause in his thoughts about helping out a certain friend back home, he found himself just generally thinking too much. Which is always dangerous, but especially for Xanders.
When he got back to his room in the evening, he opened the window to let in some fresh air, and sat down on his bed with his laptop. After reading and responding to an e-mail from Rory, he grabbed his headphones to listen to the podcast of last night's radio show, and started composing an e-mail of his own.

So I was talking to this rat today in Creature Languages class, and this being Fandom, he was talking back. And he and the professor got me to thinking - maybe you should hold off on trying that supercharged animal transformation spell you were talking about? If nothing else has worked so far, well, maybe she doesn't want ---
~~
Then Jaye's voice in his ear mentioned Buffy leaving, and Xander stopped typing for a moment. He blinked at the screen, then reversed the radio recording and replayed it, just to make sure he'd heard it right.
And again with the thinking too much.

--- to be human again? Maybe you should hold off until you find somebody who can ask her? If there's nobody there who speaks rat or can turn into one without getting stuck, maybe wait until my next break and I'll bring my books from class and we can try it together.
Was just listening to the podcast from the school radio last night and it said Buffy was leaving. Threw me for a loop even knowing that everybody here we know isn't quite the them that they are when we're us. It's... weird. Makes me miss you guys even more, and feel kind of guilty at the same time that I didn't know her better. She seemed kind of lonely and sad, and... yeah. I remember when that was going on back home before Angel came back and we weren't really getting it.
I guess I kind of get it now. Not that I'm homesick for the fresh minty breath of the Hellmouth, or sitting around my room at Fandom making practice cuts and listening to Evanescence or anything. I've met a lot of cool people, and nobody's hung me from the flagpole by my shorts yet, which as we all know beats my first year at SDHS, Larry we're looking at you from another dimension1. It's a good place. But I do miss having people who know me, not just know who I am; you guys are Three Musketeers friends, and the people here are still... icebreaker mints? Yeah, I don't know where I was going with that analogy either. But anyway, I hope if she headed home, the Buffy who was here ends up happier.
I ought to e-mail ours, too - I still owe her one fr---

At which point, Jaye said something about Rita Skeeter, Michael Bolton started singing in Xander's ear, and he ripped the headphones off in horror.
Only to hear more singing in his ear. Well, if his ear were hanging out the window, since the voice was outside.
"Baby, baby, I'd get down on my knees for youooOOooOOooo..."
Xander blinked, sat up, and did stick his ear out the window. Along with the rest of his head.
And looked down for quite a while.
Eventually he typed again, though

Whoa, he can sing. So much better than an unexpected Bolton attack. Also? Really nice hat.
Love,
Xander

was a little lacking in sequitur-ness, and probably likely to make Willow ask him if he'd been licking the frog again. Not that he'd ever licked the frog before.
